As Sontag's essay provides a transition from elitist visions of culture to the happy coexistence of forms of what would be considered high and low culture, we tackled the issue of popular culture today by looking at some music videos and lyrics by Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey. During this first session, we focused on Taylor Swift's concern with personal narrative as a fundamental part of her creative process by looking at some video materials ("Mean" music video; her acoustic version of "Bank space" at the Grammy Museum). We also reflected on her use of literary references in some of her songs, namely "Love story" and "The lakes", thus discussing whether these are real attempts at reviving the debate about the relevance of literature or just superficial rewritings of well-known classics (in this case, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the poetry of the first generation of Romantics). We also looked at some descriptions of courses focusing on her work in American and European universities.
