Cultural relativism and Postcolonial perspectives

Today's class focused on the introduction of the notion of cultural relativism in the field of anthropology and ethnology, namely through the works of Franz Boas. Particularly, we read an excerpt from his 1911 text The Mind of Primitive Man where he responds to race-based theories on culture by denying any correlation between race and cultural production, and by highlighting the problematic nature of the notion of race itself. We defined cultural relativism as an approach to the study of cultures that denies any relevance of the comparison between cultures, which should be analyzed and interpreted as separate units. 

After discussing Boas' excerpt, I introduced Postcolonial studies as the field where discourses on hegemonic and subaltern cultures are questioned and problematized. Namely, we looked at Spivak's critique of Western philosophy and its vain attempt to abandon the sphere of influence of hegemonic discourses. We discussed some key features of her work on the British rule over India and the case study of the Sati ritual as examples of the erasure of otherness resulting from colonialism.
