bell hooks, marginality as a site of resistance

25 Janeiro 2024, 09:30 Chiara Nifosi

During this second session, we discussed the short reading assigned for the day, i.e. bell hooks' essay on marginality. The text was used to introduce the basic components of the close reading practice (discussion of keywords, division of the text in sections, choice of vocabulary, syntax, figurative language).

We insisted on bell hooks' attempt to found her conception of marginality starting from the very concrete narrative of her life experience, based on a peculiar spatial organization that was in itself discriminatory for the black community. Her narrative becomes the starting point for an abstraction about marginality as a space of resistance, informed by the experience of the constant back and forth to and from the center (the white spaces).
Finally, the text was used as an example of the opposition between a hegemonic / dominant discourse and the counter discourse that bell hooks intends to generate through this essay, also by extending the paradigm of centrality vs. marginality to the context of colonization.
