Today, we read and commented some excerpts from Tawada's short story, "Where Europe begins". Particularly, we commented on those aspects of the story that could be related to Augé's idea of a non-place (in this case, the means of transports used by the protagonist to make her journey from Japan to Moscow). We also discussed displacement as a threat to individual identity, besides mentioning some important stylistic and narrative features of the text (namely, the variety of sources used to compose this sort of travel diary, the importance of the excerpts centered on the protagonist's parents as these act as anticipatory narratives that nurture her desire to undertake the journey, the folkloric dimension of the story, the recurring imagery of water, the construction of otherness through travel).
