Lévi-Strauss, "Race and History"/2

Today, we continued our discussion of Lévi-Strauss booklet on race and history. We stressed the underlying argument of the whole work, namely the necessary distinction between the theory of the biological evolution of the species and the study of cultures, to which the very idea of evolution cannot apply. We discussed some key passages of L.-S.' work, namely: the ethnocentric attitude as a form of "barbarism" in itself; the conception of history as progressive; the perception of other cultures as close to earlier stages in the line of evolution of the culture of reference (in this case, the western one); progress as a viable criteria to determine the stationary nature of other cultures' history. 

We also discussed the use of examples and metaphors as part of a broader argumentative pattern aimed at defining the specificity of anthropology as a discipline that still needs to be completely emancipated from sciences (namely the metaphor of chess and gambling).
