This second class on Said focused on the rest of the introduction, namely: the centrality of the notion of discourse (from a Foucauldian perspective); Gramsci's contribution to the definition of cultural hegemony and the two satellite notions of consensus vs. coercion; the geopolitical relevance of Orientalism as a culture, inserted into a complex web of socio-economic and ideological interests; the methodological premises posed by Said: the stigmatization of the distinction between pure and political knowledge, especially in view of a study where the "innocence" of humanistic knowledge is heavily questioned; the treatment of the corpus: the idea of authority and intertextuality within Orientalism.
