Edward Said, "Orientalism" /1

Today, we started to analyze Orientalism through the discussion of some 19th-century cultural artifacts, namely paintings that directly address settings, architecture, daily life, and people identified as "Oriental." Starting from these materials, we reconstructed biases and assumptions commonly associated with the Muslim world (hyper sexualization, gender roles, limited conception of freedom, subjugation to irrational drives, etc.). We also read an excerpt from a letter by Flaubert where the author delivers a description of an Egyptian woman, a description that consolidates the stereotypical vision of the Oriental woman in general. Please refer also to the excerpts from Lamartine and Chateaubriand in the slides.
