Geertz, "Deep play"

As an intro to Geertz' essay on the Balinese cockfight, I presented some key notions connected with his anthropological approach (namely: Talcott Parsons' action theory; the idea of symbolic anthropology as opposed to Lévi-Strauss' structural anthropology; observation and interpretation as the two main moments of his ethnographic / anthropological methodology; the "thick description"). After that, we commented on the first pages of the essay. More specifically, we talked about the narrative intro of the text, where Geertz describes his condition as an outsider within the Balinese community and his following integration. We also discussed the blend of observation and interpretation that Geertz uses in his analysis of the relationship that men entertain with the animals that are going to be used for the fights (identification on the grounds of masculinity, daily routine, relationship to animality in general).

Análise de Rosso Malpelo (1878) de Verga. A influência de L’Assommoir (1877) e do Inquérito na Sicília (1877) de Franchetti e Sonnino. O incipit de Rosso Malpelo: o leitor catapultado num mundo que não conhece. Os conceitos de “regressione” (Baldi) e “straniamento” (Luperini). O narrador não pensa e não fala como o autor e os leitores. O narrador come porta-voz do ponto de vista (maligno) da comunidade onde vive Rosso.
